Does it matter how I'm baptized?
There is a correct baptism. Here is what Scripture says about it.
He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
Mark 16:16
Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Acts 2:38
Obviously, baptism is very important, but does it matter how we are baptized? Is there a correct baptism, or will anything work? If you believe the Bible, then YES, there is a correct baptism.
Most churches baptize in the Name of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, but this is not correct according to the Bible.
In Acts 19, there were certain people who already believed on Jesus Christ, but had not yet received the Holy Ghost into their hearts. The apostle Paul knew the correct way to receive the Holy Ghost, so he asked them, “Unto what then were ye baptized?” And they said, “Unto John’s baptism.” (Acts 19:3) Paul saw that they were not baptized according to Peter’s commandment in Acts 2:38, so he instructed them to be re-baptized in the Name of the Lord Jesus. Then, as promised, they received the Holy Ghost.
So, why did the disciples baptize in the Name of Jesus when Jesus, Himself, told them to baptize in the Name (not “names”) of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost? (Matt 28:19) Did they make a mistake? No! They did exactly as they were instructed.
As you read this article, think about your name. Are you a son? Is your name, “Son”? Are you a mother? Is your name, “Mother”? Of course not, those are simply titles. You have a real name, and so does God.
Here is the answer:
And there is no such a thing in the Bible as anybody ever being baptized in the name of the Father, Son, Holy Ghost; because there is no such a thing. Father’s no name; and Son’s no name; and Holy Ghost is no name; but the Name of the Father, Son, Holy Ghost is the Lord Jesus Christ.
Jesus Christ is God! He is the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost.
If you are seeking the Holy Ghost and wondering why the Lord has not given it to you yet, then you might want to ask yourself the same question that Paul asked, “Unto what then were ye baptized?”
One Name, through every page
Through every verse, one Name. Jesus said I and my Father are one (John 10:30). Philip asked to see the Father, and Jesus answered, He that hath seen me hath seen the Father (John 14:9). Thomas, looking on the risen Christ, confessed My Lord and my God (John 20:28). John wrote that the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost these three are one (I John 5:7).
And the same Name, every time, in baptism. Peter preached be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ (Acts 2:38). Philip baptized in the same Name (Acts 8:12). Paul re-baptized in the Name of the Lord Jesus those who had not been (Acts 19:5). Whatever we do, in word or in deed, we are to do all in the name of the Lord Jesus (Colossians 3:17). For there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved (Acts 4:12).
One Lord, one faith, one baptism (Ephesians 4:5). And one Name.
